Mata Gujri Sukh Niwas: A Sanctuary of Resilience and Hope in Punjab

Nestled in the quaint village of Khanpur, Kharar in Punjab stands a beacon of hope – the Mata Gujri Sukh Niwas. This significant project, birthed by `Nishkam’, took shape over six dedicated years (1993-99), thanks to the collective support of the Sadh Sangat community from India, Kuwait, Europe, U.S.A., and Canada.

A Tribute Etched in Land

Strategically located at Gill Farm on the Chandigarh Ludhiana Highway (NH95), merely 3 kilometers from Kharar, the project’s genesis lies in a noble act of philanthropy. In 1993, Sardar Jugraj Singh Gill, a former MLA and Chairman of the Punjab Mandi Board, along with Late Sardarni Gurdev Kaur Gill, also a former MLA, generously donated the land. This magnanimous gesture was made in the loving memory of their departed sons, Pilot officer Kanwarjit Singh Gill and S. Gurjit Singh Gill.

Addressing a Decade of Despair

Punjab’s history is scarred by the unsettling decade between 1980 and 1990, which saw the tragic loss of numerous young lives. The resulting vacuum left the elderly grappling with the anguish of losing their young sons, while children mourned the absence of their parents. Recognizing this void, Mata Gujri Sukh Niwas was conceived to offer a safe haven where the elderly and the young could find solace in each other’s company, thus creating a familial atmosphere.

Infrastructure Reflecting Care

Designed to comfortably house around 100 residents, the facility features 36 well-appointed rooms with ensuite bathrooms. Additionally, residents have access to a spacious dining hall and a dedicated administrative and medical block. To ensure holistic well-being, the infrastructure includes a T.V. and leisure room, gymnasium, library, and a tranquil garden. A Gurudwara Sahib adds a spiritual dimension, while a primary health center addresses the medical needs of both residents and the neighboring community.

A Home for the Deserving

Mata Gujri Sukh Niwas opens its doors to senior citizens aged above 60 and children between 5 to 12 years. Priority is given to children hailing from vulnerable backgrounds, such as those of widows, single parents, orphans, or handicapped parents. In exceptional cases, children from economically challenged backgrounds, whose parents cannot support their education, find a home here. While children are cared for without any charges, the elderly are requested to contribute a nominal amount based on their means, up to a maximum of Rs. 1800 per month.

Dedicated Management

The day-to-day operations of Mata Gujri Sukh Niwas are overseen by a committed Local Project Committee, led by S. Jugraj Singh Gill. The institute’s seamless functioning is credited to its diligent staff, including a full-time manager, assistant manager, cook, guard, gardener, and several helpers.

In Conclusion

Mata Gujri Sukh Niwas stands as a testament to community resilience and compassion, providing a nurturing environment to those who have faced life’s harshest challenges. Through its unwavering commitment, this sanctuary promises a brighter tomorrow for many in Punjab.
